Recommendations for a second dose of Varicella (chickenpox) vaccine. On June 29, 2006, the Advisory Committee on Immunization Practices (ACIP) recommends a routine SECOND dose of Varicella (chickenpox) vaccine for children to further improve protection against the disease. The new proposed schedule for varicella vaccination for children are at ages 12-15 months and a second dose should be given at ages 4-6 years. The ACIP and the Iowa Department of Public Health recommend that children, adolescents, and adults who previously received only one dose of the varicella vaccine should receive a second dose. If a child has received one dose of vaccine AND had a case of breakthrough varicella disease (had chickenpox disease), a second dose of vaccine is not necessary.
